Evacuations are becoming more common during hurricane season—and not just along the coast. While coastal areas often take the spotlight, inland and mountainous regions are increasingly experiencing severe flooding, high winds, and storm-related impacts as hurricanes move inland.

If local authorities issue an evacuation order, it’s critical to act quickly and be prepared. Taking the right steps ahead of time can help protect your family, reduce stress, and ensure a smoother evacuation process.

What to Do Before You Evacuate

Preparing in advance can make a significant difference in your safety and ability to recover after a storm. Consider the following steps as part of your evacuation plan:

1. Pack an evacuation kit
   • Prepare a kit with essential supplies, including drinking water, nonperishable food, medications, flashlights, batteries, chargers, cash, and important documents such as identification and insurance policies.

2. Establish a meeting place
   • If your household becomes separated during an evacuation, having a predetermined meeting location can help ensure everyone reconnects safely.
3. Choose a reliable contact
   • Designate a friend or relative outside of the affected area as a central point of contact. This person can help coordinate communication and provide updates if local networks are disrupted.
4. Identify nearby shelters
   • Research local shelters ahead of time and understand your options. Be sure to share this information with family members so everyone knows where to go if needed.
5. Plan multiple evacuation routes
   • Traffic congestion and road closures are common during evacuations. Identify primary and alternate routes in advance to avoid delays.
6. Prepare your vehicle
   • Make sure your vehicle is in good working condition, keep your gas tank full, and have basic emergency supplies available, such as jumper cables and a spare tire.
7. Plan for pets
   • Not all shelters accommodate pets. Identify pet friendly shelters or boarding options ahead of time, and prepare food, medications, and carriers for your animals.

Be Prepared Before an Evacuation is Needed

Preparation should begin well before a storm is in the forecast. Reviewing your plans and securing your home in advance can help minimize potential risks and disruptions.

Do not return to your home until local authorities have confirmed it is safe to do so. Once you are able to return, carefully assess any damage and document losses as soon as possible.

The CAPI program, developed by Chubb in partnership with the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, is a comprehensive and rigorous 12-month curriculum for high-performing personal insurance professionals. Blending on-site and virtual learning, the program sets a new standard for industry excellence. Participants must have a minimum of three to five years of experience serving personal insurance clients and focus on advanced strategies to meet the complex and evolving needs of high-net-worth individuals and families — including their homes, valuables, vehicles, and lifestyles.

Through in-depth coursework, collaborative case studies, and a final capstone presentation, Ryan demonstrated exceptional expertise and an unwavering commitment to excellence. After completing his final presentation in December 2025, he officially earned the distinguished CAPI designation — a testament to his professionalism, dedication to lifelong learning, and passion for outstanding client service.

The 63rd Annual Conference of the South Carolina Council of IAIP International was held September 5–6, 2025, in Spartanburg. The conference kicked off with a welcome party at Fifth Third Park, where members cheered on the Hub City Spartanburgers, the city’s new minor league baseball team. The weekend concluded with Saturday’s Awards Banquet at the AC Hotel, an inspiring evening of recognition and celebration.

Each year, a group of exceptional insurance professionals are selected to represent their states and then can compete to become the National Outstanding CSR of the Year.

To qualify for this top state honor, Tammie Blackwood, of Correll Insurance Group of Gaffney, submitted the winning essay on the following topic:

As technology continues to reshape the insurance industry, CSRs and Account Managers must navigate the challenge of integrating digital tools while maintaining strong, personal client relationships. AI, automation, and data analytics have enhanced efficiency and accuracy, but over-reliance on technology can lead to impersonal interactions. In your essay, discuss three keyways’ CSRs can successfully embrace technological advancements while preserving meaningful client relationships.

Additionally, Tammie Blackwood was selected for having demonstrated outstanding service and professionalism within the insurance community. 

A native of Gaffney, South Carolina, Tammie embarked on her insurance journey at Allstate in 1998, starting as a secretary then becoming a licensed agent.  In 2002, Tammie shifted to the agency side, dedicating herself to the role of Customer Service Representative. Over the course of her career, she has assumed roles such as Personal Lines Manager, Small Business Specialist, and Marketing. With more than 25 years of experience in the insurance industry—including over two decades in the independent sector—Tammie has dedicated her career to serving clients and supporting her team. She holds several respected industry designations: CIC, CISR Elite, and AIAM.

In January 2015, she started working for Correll Insurance Group as a Commercial Lines Account Manager and has been there ever since supporting multiple offices. Outside of work, she is an avid reader—averaging 65 books each year—and cherishes time with her two daughters. She is actively involved as a member of the Spartanburg Area Insurance Professionals (SAIP) and as a State Member, participates in her church choir, and is guided by a strong faith.

Eight college scholarships were awarded this spring by the IIABSC Foundation to children of member agency employees that will be full-time college students in Fall 2025.

Each year the Foundation awards five or more college scholarships to those qualified individuals either entering college or already undergrads. To be eligible, applicants must be a South Carolina resident and enrolled as a full-time student in the fall. They are looking for students that are active in his or her school and community, demonstrate a solid work ethic, possess strong leadership and teamwork abilities, and a desire to succeed.

Tricia Blackwood, daughter of Tammie Blackwood of Correll Insurance Group of Gaffney, received this scholarship for the third year in a row. Tricia Blackwood, currently attending Limestone University with a major in English Education.

Brandon has volunteered with JA, a nonprofit focused on youth education, for 15 years and has served for the past five years as a board member for the organization’s regional arm, Junior Achievement of Memphis and the Mid-South. Brandon previously served as board chair and currently chairs the organization’s investment committee.  

“Our local business community’s support of JA is critical to achieving our mission, to inspire and prepare young people to succeed in the global economy,” said Leigh Mansberg, president and CEO of Junior Achievement of Memphis and the Mid-South. “Brandon Cooper, commercial risk consultant with Insight Risk Management, is a remarkable example of that spirit of dedication and service to others. In a very real way, he helps JA students throughout the Mid-South region get the knowledge and skills they need to own their economic success, plan for their future, and make smart academic and economic choices.” 

His work on behalf of JA, and the children it serves, was recognized nationally at the ceremony in Washington, D.C. in June 2024, where Brandon received the highest volunteer recognition that the nonprofit bestows. During Brandon’s tenure, his regional JA office built a new (debt-free) location, increased its budget from $600,000 to more than $2.5 million and increased the level of service to more than 25,000 students per year!  

In 2002 Brandon and his wife Christy made a generous donation to the nonprofit, resulting in the creation of a facility the "Cooper Command Center." This facility serves as a space for staff and volunteers to gather and conduct capstone simulations.

During the IIABSC's Annual Convention, Frank Sheppard, CEO of IIABSC presented Jon A. Jensen, CEO of Correll Insurance Group, with the Jon A. Jensen Legacy Award, of which he is the inaugural recipient. 

This award celebrates Jon's exceptional contributions and aims to inspire future generations within the industry. What to do during a hurricane watch

1. Read our Preparing for Evacuation Guide.
2. Fuel and service family automobile.
3. Check supply of prescription medicine (10 days - 2 weeks)
4. Check and replenish first-aid supplies.
5. Check and replenish supply of batteries.
6. Go to bank to get extra cash.
7. Review where the family will evacuate.
8. Turn freezer to maximum cold setting.
9. Bring in items which can become projectiles.
10. Back up and turn off computers.

What to do during a hurricane warning 

1. Put up Hurricane Shutters, tape or board windows.
2. Begin your Pre-Evacuation Checklist.
3. Notify neighbors and relatives of where you'll be.
4. Place towels around window sills and doors to reduce water seepage.
5. Place insecticides and other toxins in water-tight containers and in a high spot.
6. Create a plan for your pets.
7. Unplug small appliances & electronics including items like golf carts.
8. Lock all windows & doors.
9. Drive safely using SC designated evacuation routes.
10. Watch for dangling electrical wires and NEVER drive through water if you can't see the road beneath.

Do not return until authorities give the all-clear.

What does umbrella insurance cover?
Umbrella insurance will cover you if you face liability for property damage or injury to yourself or others and associated legal defense costs. The umbrella policy covers liability that exceeds the amount of your primary policies.

For example, if you have a homeowners policy that includes up to $500,000 in liability, an umbrella policy would kick in if you were at fault in an accident in which the victim was awarded more than $500,000 in damages. This is why umbrella insurance is also called excess liability insurance.

How much does umbrella insurance cost?
Besides the protection and peace of mind umbrella insurance provides, perhaps its best feature is how affordable it is. While rates vary depending on your claims history, where you live and other factors, $1 million of umbrella coverage can cost less than $200 a year (less than $17 a month).

How much umbrella coverage should you have?
This depends largely on the value of your assets, any investments, your income, and future earning potential. Your assets and income are at risk in a lawsuit. It is important to consider what kinds of risks you face as well as the value of your assets and the potential loss of income you might face in the event of an accident in which you are found liable.

Like for-profit businesses, nonprofit organizations face risks and potential liabilities, and insurance is an essential part of risk mitigation for all incorporated nonprofits. (If the nonprofit is not incorporated, any potential liability falls on the individual(s) who formed and/or run the enterprise.)

There are some risks — and, therefore, insurance coverages and programs — unique to nonprofits. No single policy will cover every risk a nonprofit could face. Once you know you are safe, you can begin to assess any potential damage to your home and property. Follow these tips after the storm is over:

• Avoid downed power lines. Never touch anything in contact with power lines, including vehicles, as well as water or water puddles that may be near the downed power lines.
• Be wary of any gas lines that may have been damaged or broken during the storm. If a gas leak is suspected, stay out of the property until the utility company deems it safe.
• Be cautious of hazards that are a product of the storm, such as water due to flooding, sharp or broken objects, insects, snakes, damaged tree limbs, or other structures that may have been damaged by high winds or water.
• Separate and inventory any damaged personal property. Create a list of any damaged contents, including a description of the item, name of the manufacturer, brand name, age, as well as the place and date of purchase, if known. Include photographs, videotapes or personal property inventories you may already have available.
• If you find broken windows or doors, protect your property from further damage by boarding them up. This should deter vandalism and prevent additional weather damage. Arrange for reasonable temporary repairs if possible.
• Keep accurate records of your expenses and save bills and receipts from your temporary repairs. (Avoid making permanent repairs until your Claim Professional has reviewed the damage.) Keep accurate records of any other expenses incurred.
• If you think your home might be unsafe due to storm damage, contact your insurance company to discuss finding temporary accommodations.
